   I didn't mean to suggest that anybody would necessarily be happier
with Linux than a MAC.  If you want a computer specifically to do audio,
video, photos, or music, don't want to fuss with it and don't care what 
it costs,
the MAC is the machine to have.
  But if have a nice x86 PC, open source is a reliable alternative, and 
it's easy
to do dual boot for the software you can't get open source.
  I also had an NCR SCSI controller.  Really nice chip, two years old,
not supported by Red Hat, not even as sourse level, I'd have to
go find it.  Grrrrrrrrrrr.  It was on the motherboard, too, and
it was why I bought that motherboard.
   Specialized hardware is the hardest thing.  It is getting better all the
time but if what you've got is bleeding edge, forget it, as a rule.
  I've never met Stalling, thanks for sharing your impressions of him.
