Hi. When I was looking to replace the piece of crap lens that came with my Rebel, I looked at Sigma, Tokina and Tamron lenses. I was hoping to find an adequate zoom in the range you stated, but could not. The best I could do was the Sigma 18-70, and it is a pretty darn good lens. Way better than the Canon kit lens. Here is a site that might help with some reviews of lenses.

While hiking around Devil's Post Pile I ran into a couple from England on their honeymoon. He had a Sigma 18-200, one that I had debated but turned down. He let me borrow it, and the few images I took were not too bad. I was using it at the 200mm range, so that appears to be one of the good ranges according to the review.

Sigma has just released a new version of this lens with OS, optical stabilization, that may be what you are looking for. Or you could tell him to dump the Canon and get the Nikon D300 with the kit 18-200 that my father-in-law just bought. Sweet camera and the lens is pretty darn good for such an extreme range. :-)

Aram

Thanks Aram - he's not as much into photography as we are - he owns a brand new inherited M3 and Summi which he has never used. So I doubt a D300 with that excellent VR lens would be what he's dreaming of. I'll have a look at the Sigma with OS - if OS works as well as on my Vario-Elmarit, then he's on the safe side.
Thanks for the input.
Bien cordialement de Metz
