OK now I feel better! :-)
Usually when I shoot a baseball game I'm working with a Motor drive R Leica
of some kind & a 280 2.8 lens and the lens front element outer flanges are
touching the wire fencing. I never bother looking to see what wire crosses
in front of the lens simply because a long lens 280-560-800 will not show
the wire, period! There isn't any effect as long as one shoots wide open or
nearly so, then the wires are all out of focus and it looks like I was
shooting on the playing field.
I know some folks may challenge this, but that's cool as I have lots of
pictures shot through fences without anyone knowing that the wires were
almost touching the front element glass! :-)
I never bend or kneel down shooting baseball it's always a standing position
usually from behind the umpire through the fencing. Or from somewhere along
third base line and or first base line. I don't use the 280 all the time,
sometimes I'd use the 80-200 f 4.0 Leica zoom lens, but always wide open!
Baseball is a great sport to shoot as you aren't up and down a football or
soccer field and can pretty well stay in the same spot start to finish of
the game and get the key players in action. Rarely do I worry about shooting
out fielders even with the 800mm lens. You wait for them to come to bat and
get a good angle from the opposite shoulder they swing from.
Anyway your two frames are very well done and thanks for your answer of
where you were shooting from.
Baseball can be a very dangerous sport to cover for any photographer who
thinks he or she will be OK standing on the playing field. But in most cases
the umpire will make you leave the field whether you like it or not thinking
you wont be hit by a ball or flying bat.
Cheers,
ted
