Steve pointed out:
At this point, putting Leica designed (if not built) lenses on the
Panashiba cameras is probably the best thing they have going for
them, in terms of (re) building brand awareness.
sort of, but it may be awareness of a misleading kind,
unless you want the public to see the hole instead of the donut...
Well, in a way, Steve. To the masses, all they know is that if they
want a better camera, they simply need to buy the Panashiba with the
Leica lens.
It matters, only to us, that these lenses are not made by
Leica. They are Leica designed and just as much a Leica, to the lay
person, as the 80~200/f4 Vario is to us - even though it's a Leica
design, built by Kyocera, in Japan.
The fact that they know that Leica is the better lens, is the bit
that counts ... and, in building brand awareness, the only bit that counts.
And Panasonic is featuring the superiority of Leica lenses, as a way
to encourage consumers to buy a Panasonic, in an ad budget that Leica
could only dream about.
Cheers!
