[LRflex] Re: Lumix L 1 - Leica D 3 - Oly 330E (Using R lenses)

Hi Howard,

thanks for this detailed reply to my post.

I'm pleased with the results I have got so far with the L1, and the
Vario is a fine piece of a lense.
Stabilization is a feature I do enjoy.

I knew of Gary's experiments and had followed his thread with great
interest.

I know there are adapters, I simply want one that won't jam or destroy
the contacts on the body - playing it safe as it would.
Prices range from 20 to 200 dollars on an auction site, and I can't see
any difference; that's why I had a look at Leica's site.

I think I will miss the Oly's feature that keeps display light constant
as you describe it, together with the movable screen :-(

I also find the systematic reset to default values when switching on
really bugging.
I hope they will address the problem in a next upgrade of the soft.

Otherwise, I have fired a few hundred shots at the weekend in order to
form an opinion on the various features, and on the quality that can be
expected from both camera and lense.
I haven't been disappointed in the least, even though I had no prior
expectation as it really was an very, very unexpected present. :-)

I do like the feel of the camera, and the L1 is one and it handles as
one; I won't complain about this either.
Operating the zoom or focusing manually is simply as with any R camera;
I hate bridges for the lack of those two features, well most of them do

The "tunnel" vision is a bit awkward for sure, but many a range finder
does not offer more, rather less.
I still have a couple of them, not using them much though, if at all.
And I will still carry the R8 along with me for a bright viewfinder.
The LCD, even though it is not movable, does have a smack of my LF and
MF wooden cameras, which I really love - I understand your point about
the Rolleiflex as I still have a Mamayia C3 too, and I don't feel
frustrated at the idea of looking at a large and bright screen :-) .

I find working in the manual shooting mode a bit tricky and this will
require some getting used to, but it seems quite feasible.

Now my main question was about using the Leica D3 software on the L1.
Have you heard of anyone who has managed:
a) to get the Leica firmware?
b) to install and use successfully on the L1?
c) has found it better than the Pana one?

I will post a few test snaps on the LUGallery during the week and wil
post the pointer.

Till then, thanks again, and
to be continued I imagine.
