I actually did use a technique much like this for this photo (with 1.4x
extender!):

I pre-focussed the lens and held it (on monpod/shoulder stock) aimed at
the pine cones and watched the jay with both eyes away from the
viewfinder so I could anticipate the right moment to trip the shutter.
I didn't think about MLU though, that may have helped.
