Hi Doug, I like your work very much.
Looking back, what would you recommend a newbee who likes beautifull
pictures ? Would you say : buy cheap tools first and learn, or would you say
: buy the real stuf from the beginning, because you will end buying these
lenses anyway and it will cost you double. You did buy the cheaper lenses
too ... in the beginning.
Anyway, I don't know much, but I must admit I see very clearly the
difference between the cheap nikon lens, and the angenieux 70-210 I own.
More detail, better colors, beter bokeh.
New Leica's are no option for me but second hand the prices get more
realistic.
And secondly, if we talk about good stuff, how would you compare the good
nikons with your favorit Leica lenses ?
For example : what is the difference for you between the Af-s 300mm prime of
nikon and the 280mm APO.
Or the very nice105mm Nikon and the APO 100 ? Maybee Aram knows more about
that.
Maybee you answered this 1000x , sorry for that.
greetings, axel

Hi Aram,
is it THAT MUCH better than other 90mm or 100mm lenses ? In other words :
is it worth every penny ? Can you show us some pictures? greetings, axel

Oh, the 100 APO will give you loads of fun. It will make you very
happy. If I ever dump all my stuff, as I have said before, it will not
be the 100 APO. I'll adapt that one to whatever light trapping box I
have on hand. That one you will have to pry out of my dead hands.
Aram
There's a lot of subjectivity that goes into the worth of a tool. How
much do you value accurate, saturated colors? What value do you place on
the last 10% of resolution (however that's measured)?
When discussing the merits of the 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt, I feel the same way
Aram does about the 100 APO. I can certainly make pictures with a
less-expensive lens (and I did so for many years), but the image quality
the 280 APO delivers inspires me to use it more, and to make the extra
effort to get the most out of the lens. I haven't figured out how to put
a monetary value on this. This might sound like an evasive non-answer but
the value and worth of the tool is something only you can determine for
yourself.
