Hi David,
   Based on Axel's 'successes' with the poor source material of an online jpeg, 
assuming that is what he used, I suspect you, Davd, could far exceed his 
results on an esthetic basis using the RAW original file as source material. 
What I am alluding to is Reprocessing your original DNG, NEF, TIFF, or CR file, 
through the RAW conversion process and focusing your efforts only upon  making 
the branch look good. Assuming success pulling those highlights down (many raw 
files have some 'headroom' to do this- but no guarantees) you can use a 
photoshop type process with layers to blend the new branch in to an existing 
image file.
Based on my limited experience doing this, it is either happiness and joy 
staight off executing the blend or a dark and futile nightmare that makes you 
rethink your choices in hobbies! :-)
