[LRFlex] Re: Indexing Negatives

I certainly wish that I had started back in the 60's with a tight "date, roll, frame" system.

It's not too late, Phil!

Early last summer I embarked on the task of organizing and filing my photos - some going back as far as 1962 - which had previously been filed in the time-honoured "shoebox" method.

It took me nearly 6 months of spare time (and I'm retired!) to do the job. I needed to consult old photo albums, love letters, school records, old passports and old you-name-it as well as numerous old friends to sort out what I'd done, when, in order to complete the job.

Now that it's done, it's a treat to use. Because I list the contents of the roll on the outer label and because I can usually remember at least the decade I took the desired shot in; I can find just about any photo in about 15 minutes max. (I can scan a year in under 90 seconds.)

Mind you, I cheat. If, when filing, I have any photos of particular importance, significance, quality or commercial viability (I wish), I note a quick title and the frame number(s) in red ink, at the bottom. Makes the shots I'm more likely to hunt for more visible. :)

One last trick... now, when I give prints away, I pencil a small notation on the back with the file number. If, such as at weddings, they ask for reprints, they just have to quote me the file number and there are no mistreaks.

Oh... and this isn't off topic! Since the early 80's, all my negs and slides have been made by Leicas! :)
