[LRflex] Re: IMG: a Friday flower

Hello, David,

the camera used was my first DSLR - a Canon 300D (Digital Rebel) - the lens was my beloved Yashica 2.8/55 mm Macro (dare I say it? it knocks Leica into a cocked hat).

Lighting:

Diffused lighting from all sorts of directions with daylight temperature, soft, flat lighting (3 glass-topped light tables usually used for viewing slides, two behind the bottom edge of the background paper, one from the side).

Mirror used to reflect sunlight from the office window on to the subject from the side.

Processing:

Part 1 - the fast bit:

1. Select levels in PS - select white point in the background (it was grey due to under-exposure, I spot metered on the orange parts of the flower) 2. Reduce contrast and brightness (this makes the background light grey again)
3. Repeat step 1 on the darkest remaining bit of background

Part 2 - the tedious bit:

I selected the image background and replaced with 100% soft-light fill (paint-bucket tool) in steps, increasing the feathering value with each step.

A little edge softening applied (blur tool).

Very slight changes in colour temperature, contrast, saturation and levels.

The hard bit is getting smooth edges when replacing the background.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't :-)

All the best from Hannover
Douglas

A dull and muggy day here in Hannover, not much to do either.

So here's a splash of colour:

Very nice Douglas!

What camera/lens and how did you create the clean, white backdrop?

Enquiring minds, want to know!

Cheers!
