   I would say W. Eugene Smith did.
   For sure realism has gone out of fashion in the mass media.
The most marketable idea of personal tragedy seems to be the latest
teen star in rehab, at least in the US.  I would say it isn't
the case everywhere.
   Have a look at the 2007 World Press Photo album in print.
They aren't all great photos, but many of them are moving, and they
were all shot last year.  Photojournalism isn't dead by any means.
   There will always be people who shrink away from pain in
art.  It doesn't mean artists will stop creating, and connecting.
