[LRflex] Film vs. Digital Sales Stats.

Sales statistics for the first four months of 2005 vs the first four
months of 2006 are just out. Please not that these are Canadian
statistics, but I would imagine that although the numbers will vary
in Europe and the Excited States, the percentages will be very similar!

1 to 3 megapixels: - 85.5%
4 to 6 megapixels: + 49.3%
Digital SLR + 44.0%
35mm P&S cameras - 46.0%
35mm SLR Cameras - 61.5%

Or to put it another way, while DSLR unit sales are still less than
6% of point and shoot sales, film SLRs are now less than 8% of DLSR sales!

What's also interesting is that the 3.2 mp & under category is
virtually gone, while the growth in 4 ~6 mpixel point & pray models
is greater than that in dSLRs, which has been seen, by the industry,
as the "hot" category.

Some other interesting, if somewhat useless, stats are the share of
advertising, by brand.

In compact digitals, it's as follows:

Canon 26 %
Sony 15 %
Kodak 10 %
Panasonic 9 %
Fuji 9 %
Nikon 8 %
Olympus 7 %
HP 6 %
Pentax 4 %
Casio 2 %

For dSLRs, the breakdown is:

Canon 51 %
Nikon 23 %
Olympus 16 %
Pentax 9 %
Fuji 1 %

Note: totals may not add up to 100% as I have rounded to the nearest %.

Sorry, guys, but Leica did not make either list!

Don't shoot me! I'm just the messenger. But I thought some of you
might find this interesting.

To top it all off, I've just returned from town, where I was in the
photo dept. of our largest retailer. They've just moved into a new
store, having spent nearly a million bucks to built the new
premises. They now stock only 4 types of B&W and 4 types of colour
film. Personally, I find the whole thing rather depressing!

Cheers!
