[LRflex] Re: Erwin Puts on the DM-R

What bothers me about Puts' review is its emphasis on sharpness only. No
mention of dynamic range, one of the most significant problems of digital
capture, which several DMR users have stated is significantly better with the
DMR than their own 1Ds Mk II equipment. Likewise Erwin barely mentions color
rendition, again one of the strengths of the DMR as reported by several users.

If one is primarily interested in sharpness and wants to go no further than the
cameras' default setting and the one-size-fits-all software developer Puts used
then his review has significant merit. For the more experienced user who will
optimize the cameras's settings and use optimum software to devlop the RAW
files this review prompts more questions than it answers.

Interesting post Jerry.

I suppose that the scenario you posit makes the impartial review of any
expensive piece of equipment very difficult. It would take a very strong
individual- who has spent many dollars- to admit that such purchase was
somewhat ill advised. Likewise, one suspects that many of the "impartial"
reviews of any product are tainted by various emollients and hidden
incentives. Such being stated, Erwin Puts has, at least to me, appeared to
be rather impartial in that he has not been afraid to criticize Leica
products when such criticism appeared to be valid. I realize that others
feel that Mr. Puts is often very biased towards Leica. Indeed, if one
accepts ( I do not ) that such Leica bias exists then the lukewarm review of
the DMR is particularly bothersome for those of us who have entertained
purchasing the DMR.

For those interested in more sophisticated SLR 35mm digital work, one can
easily envision a scenario in which a commitment might be made to a
different brand. Desiring the full functionality that matched lenses,
bodies, flash, and sensors confer makes consideration of Nikon, Canon, and
other "marks" both cost effective and reasonable. As others have stated, a
very high end Nikon digital body and several Nikon lenses can be purchased
for less money then the Leica DMR.
