[LRFlex] Re: Digital camera while waiting for Leica

Hi Gary,
I have owned or used the Canon D60, 10D, the Rebel, and the D1 MkII as well as the Nikon D100 and D70. If you want to use Leica R glass then you have to go with Canon with an adaptor. The best of the bunch, at 8 Megapix, is, of course the D1MkII, which has the added benefit of interchangeable focusing screens which means you can put in a split image E1b screen and accurately focus wide angle R glass. The disadvantage of the D1 MkII is its cost, availability, and weight. The next best is the 10D - assuming you want to use Leica R glass - it's lighter and cheaper that the D1 MkII but you can't change the focusing screen and for me at least, accurate focus with Leica glass (especially wide angles) on the smaller Canons is problematic. The Rebel, a dumb-downed 10D with a plastic body, doesn't have enough manual controls for my taste. Now, if you don't want to use Leica R glass, the Nikons, both the D70 and the D100 are a joy to use - quick, responsive and capable of producing images equal to the Canon 6 Megapix images. The Nikons however require more image processing tweaking to get to better images than the Canons which do just fine right out of the box. To complicate your decision making, I understand there will be a new Canon replacement for the 10D - with 8 Megapix - announced in the Fall and Nikon will have a replacement for the D100 after that. Maybe the best short term solution is a Rebel while you wait for the next generations. I hope this helps - but am doubtful that it does. :-)
Cheers

I'm needing digital capture for work *now* and am wondering how other Leica
users have transitioned. The R8/9 digital back still won't be out for a few
months and may have startup problems anyway. In the meantime, a client would
like digital for a few book covers and the shoot will more than cover the
cost of some type of "prosumer" SLR. I'm leaning toward the Nikon D70. Would
love to use my Leica glass, but need to get digital direct capture going
soon. As usual, Leica is not just months late out of the starting gate, but
*years* late!

My current digital workflow is to shoot film on Leica or Hasselblad and scan
with an Imacon Flextight Photo (6x6cm film gives 135mb files at full
resolution). What have you used that has given reasonable quality in a
D-SLR?

Thanks,
