David and Bob,
Are not the two things that define depth of field the size of the circle
of confusion (definition: http://tangentsoft.net/fcalc/help/CoC.htm )and
the distance from the subject? No matter what focal length you use, if you
are a certain distance from the subject the depth of field would be the
same for the same circle of confusion size. So an enlargement of a portion
of a short-lens picture would show the same depth of field (but much reduce
resolution) as the equivalent frame area from a long-lens picture.
