Hi Elliot!

The TTL function does not work with the DMR and the reason is simple.

TTL flash depends on the meter reading the light reflected off the
film, during the exposure. The reflectivity of the sensor is
different than that of film, and thus any exposure calculated would
be incorrect.

The obvious solution would be to make an adjustment, knowing the
reflectivity of the sensor. However, this basic fact was not known
when the R8 and R9 were designed, as the DMR had only been thought of
as a concept, at that time.

When/if the mythical R10-D is ever produced, TTL flash will not only
be possible, but easy, as the circuitry already exists, and the
reflective value will be known, as it will be designed as one
integrated camera.

For now... use "auto". In 98.9% of cases, it makes very little
difference, and you needn't buy a very expensive, specialized flash.

Cheers!
