Blue painters tape worked fine. Didn't hurt the mirror. The tan stuff, 
I would be weary of that.

Yes, stop down metering is less convenient. The Canon is set to 
aperature priority so there is some automation going on. When using 
Leica lenses, I'm using them wide open or nearly wide open and focusing 
is not a problem.
