Ph: I find it very difficult even with the extender - I can tell you - 
210 x 2 or equivalent is your (David's) basic gear ...  one of the 
problems is the depth of field, and you lose quite a bit of light, 
making it hard to focus as the R4-7 are not as clear as the SL or R3 series.

Thanks for the other tips too David, although I've got to find time and 
sunshine at the same time - spring has been disastrous over here so far
