I cannot speak for Doug, but for me, patience is the number one
attribute for a nature photographer. And a comfortable camping stool
is the number one accessory!

When shooting water foul, as an example, I'll go down to the lake
shore, with a small, aluminum legged stool, a straw hat, lots of
sunscreen and a camera on a monopod. The birds all leave, now matter
how slowly I approach.

I set myself up, lean on the camera/monopod combo, and wait. After a
half hour to 45 minutes of patient waiting, they get used to me and
slowly swim/fly back. Then, moving smoothly and fairly slowly, I
spin around to various positions and fire away.

Sometimes, after 50 or more shots and 2 or 3 hours... I'll come home
with a gem. Other times, nothing. Sometimes, I'll sit for a couple
of hours, and never even fire the shutter!

Patience is, indeed, a prime attribute for nature work, of any kind.
