The parents or legal guardians are required to sign a release of liability
before a minor may ride, so the event organizers are not liable. It's a
risk I accepted when my daughter wanted to ride competetively. Balanced
against this risk were the personal rewards and experiences she gained. In
twelve years of riding she has dislocated her jaw (she pushed it back in
place to avoid a trip to the doctor) and has had a broken sternum. She can
no longer ride competetively due to an injury from a traffic accident (she
was not at fault).
