Two doses of extreme happiness today.
Nice to see some positive mental attitude - and what a charming story!
In answer to a small ad in saturday's paper I visited an elderly
gentleman this afternoon who wanted to do an exchange of his Chrome
SL with three lenses (2,8/35,2,8/50,2,8/135) for an M2 or a IIIG.
I happened to have an M2 with a chrome 2/90 and a 3,5/35 so there we
were. The deal was over in 30 seconds, each camera found a good home,
that was the first dose.
I think that's called 'synchronicity'.........
I finally left his flat after 3 solid hours of Leica talk, local
camera dealers, greatest bargains, jokes, WWII (from different
sides) youth, politics, cats, dogs and food etc, etc, etc.
Well, when two Leica nuts meet, the conversation is never just
confined to Leicas. Out of interest, had he switched in the past from
Leica r/f to Leica R?
This extremely nice gent is just short of his eightieth, confined to
a wheelchair and had to part with his SL because he can't hold it
any more after a second stroke crippled his right hand. In spite of
what, for some, would seem an unbearable burden, Harry is as happy
as a sandman when he gets a chance to talk Leica.
What a courageous gentleman - fair do's to him for not throwing in
the Leica towel. From what you've said the chat was probably more
important than the exchange.
All in all a really nice day, and two very happy Leica enthusiasts.
It just goes to prove once again how these wonderful bits of
precision engineering bring together such a diversity of individuals.
Great story, Douglas - it made my day.
Best
Alex
