My understanding is that the earlier Canon Raw (.CRW) files had the .jpeg file 
embedded.  The newer ones make .CR2 files, where the jpeg is separate.

Your points on shooting single colour shots is most interesting and quite 
correct.
 
Please, don't spend all your time lurking!  Your post shows that we all have 
something to offer, even though we often don't think that to be true. And the 
more we help each other, the better we all are!
