Hi Spencer!
I wonder, too ... but then DVD's have proved a more reliable medium
than CD's for archival storage. Time will tell.
I haven't looked at the physical structure of a writable DVD but if it
is the same a writable CD, then scratching the "top" side will destroy
a DVD as easily as a CD.
Actually, Spencer, that's not quite true. The DVD's have an extra
(albeit thin) layer of plastic between the data an the "top" side..
which makes them more resistant to damage than a CD. Otherwise, they
are, indeed, much the same.
I don't think the technology between the 2 is different enough
for me to say one will be more reliable than the
other. I treat both as unsuitable for archival storage.
That is, of course, your choice. These days, none of the options are
foolproof. Although I've had my problems with 1 set of DVDs, I've not
lost any photos. I use DVDs, for back-up, simply because I've also
had hard drives fail, and with a DVD "going west", I will lose fewer
photos than if a HD "goes west". I also burn 3 copies of each disc!
"To each his own", said the old lady, as she kissed the cow...
