Good Mornin' Douglas!
you got me worried at first, I just took a look at the link, it is
actually not a very recent update. This software update was, IIRC; around
in November or December of last year. This version, 1.1.0, is probably
already installed in most 20Ds.
Sorry if I alarmed you!
I agree, it "should". However, I've found two chaps, here, one with 1.0.5
installed, the other with 1.0.4, who didn't yet know about the update.
My point, however, was not that current owners needed this, but that
updates are needed, even from an experienced a digital maker as Canon. If
the DM-R, when released, needs an update, will Leica be able to afford to
make/offer it?
It actually does correct a problem that sometimes turned up at ISO 1600
and 3200, I had it on a couple of shots taken in a museum mine in the Harz
mountains, probably the only time I ever used the built-in flash and high
speeds. As it was the shots were rubbish anyway, to get what I wanted I
should have had a bank of Metz artillery with GN of at least 60.
Glad to hear it worked. Pity about your results. :-(
BTW the EOS 350D has already been featured in the German press, a reduced
size, 8.0 megapixels, pentamirror with all (as far as I can tell) the
functions of the 20D (including custom functions) The pentamirror is
reported to be brighter than that of its predecessor 300D.
Such a beast is not available here, as yet. Nice as it may be, I think the
20D (or it's perhaps soon to be successor) is more suited to my liking. I
know that none of the Canons are built like a Leica, but I've been so used
to the Leica quality that I don't think I can step down 'too' far, and
still be happy.
I've played with both the 300D (Digi-Rebel, here) and the 20D, and the 20D
had a much nicer 'feel'. I hate concepts like 'feel', but they are real,
though impossible to quantify.
I think if I were to go smaller than the 20D, I'd look at the Panasonic
built LikaLeica with the 10x IS zoom.
Here, I'd be operating on Neil Gould's theory of not spending a bundle
until you're sure you like it! (And a good theory it is, too!)
Cheers!
