The microprism collar on the Katz-Eye screen works sometimes, but the
fine microprisms surrounding it are usually better. The rangefinder
split isn't accurate enough for much of anything. The Katz-Eye is
designed to avoid darkening its focusing aids for apertures to f/11.
Today with 1000mm f/8, I had to use manual focus with an American
brown pelican in breeding plumage. They're rare up here at this
season. The EOS 1D mark II has a center sensor only for AF with
lenses f/8 and slower, but most of the time I just skip it and use
MF. The 1D mark II's relatively bright viewfinder makes it easier
than it would be with the 20D.

I hope you're not trying to use the split-image or microprism for
focusing the 400 f/6.8! Use the matte area of your viewscreen
instead (or, the extremely fine microprisms of the SL that works
like the matte plastic of a typical viewscreen, only brighter and clearer).
I found that when my eyes started having problems the SL's
viewfinder was a good solution to the focussing problem. Now, 15
years later, it's still quick and easy to focus the 560 f/6.8 + 1.4x
extender accurately on the SL.
