I hope you're not trying to use the split-image or microprism for focusing the 400 f/6.8! Use the matte area of your viewscreen instead (or, the extremely fine microprisms of the SL that works like the matte plastic of a typical viewscreen, only brighter and clearer).

I found that when my eyes started having problems the SL's viewfinder was a good solution to the focussing problem. Now, 15 years later, it's still quick and easy to focus the 560 f/6.8 + 1.4x extender accurately on the SL.
