Re: canon 5D and leica R lens

Steve:
I use L-glass or DO IS lenses on EOS 1D mark II and 20D bodies. Haven't used a 5D, though last quarter's Photovision CDROM featured an Australian wedding photographer who uses two of them. 5D Image quality looks real good in the hi-res images on the CDROM - no noise discernible, though shooting was in good outdoor and indoor light at lower ISOs.

Canon L-glass is excellent.

I have both EF 400mm f/4 DO IS and Leitz Telyt 400mm f/6.8 lenses. What I notice is the Telyt gives higher contrast but more chromatic aberration and a bit less sharpness. That's on the same subjects in same-subject A-B picture comparisons. I plan a couple LHSA articles about the differences - if Bill Rosauer will accept them.

The EF 500mm f/4L IS is excellent for anything. It works particularly well with EF1.4X II teleconverter. Results with EF 2X II aren't as good unless focus and exposure are perfect - and you're close enough to get good detail without intervening haze or fog.

EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS is an excellent all-round telephoto zoom. Since I 'see' in telephoto mode a lot, I really like using it. Sharp at focal length extremes, no chromatic aberration.

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L is superb. Construction is pretty good. The front plastic ring where the shade twists on has come loose, but the rest of the lens is solid. Results are sharp and contrasty. It's the lens I use most for weddings and events.

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is also very good, whether you're shooting sports, weddings, or wildlife.

The EF 16-35mm f.2.8L is pretty special-purpose. When you have limited space at a wedding, there's nothing else.

And I have an EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 as a backup for the 24-70mm. I also use an EF 15mm f/2.8 fisheye in special situations.

If you'd like to see example images from any of these lenses, I'd be happy to send them to you.

Just wondering here on a Sunday morning... for a Canon 20 D owner who
uses leica R glass, how sensible is it to trade up to a Canon 5D
especially for leica R glass, but also for Canon glass, especially L
glass?

Aiming this simple question at people who may have actually used these cameras, and have some experience with them...

I'm interested primarily in image quality, though ease of use and
ease of focus are also very important...

( a very serious question, though I feel funny asking it ... my recent shooting has primarily been with a leica M3 and old M glass )....

thanks, Steve
