Dave:
It was a 400mm f/4 DO IS. Yes, the bokeh was worse than that lens
usually shows, but I think it was due to exhaust from the lead
motorcycle and team cars that day.

Mark what lens did you use to shoot the Dave Zabriskie shot? Nice
separation shot of Dave but horrible bokeh. The trio of Mtn bikers is nice.

Jim:
This image of gravity racer Cedric Gracia shows what I'm talking about:

Admittedly, I was on-course and had a lot more room to work with.
This image of Dave Zabriskie at last year's Tour of California
shows what I mean for a road cycling event:

It looks like Steve didn't have a lot of room to work with. So
there was a limited amount of isolation possible.
Looking at it again, shot 2 bothers me more from the cut-off wheels
of the peloton leaders. I prefer groups with space for the wheels,
even when you can't see them:

It's like allowing space for a shorebird's feet even if they're under water.

Photo #2 & #3 have exactly that. The background is not sharp and
(to me) makes for enough separation. The riders are crispy sharp
and there is no question what the subject is (subjects are).
IMHO,
