It looks like Steve didn't have a lot of room to work with. So there was a limited amount of isolation possible.

Looking at it again, shot 2 bothers me more from the cut-off wheels of the peloton leaders. I prefer groups with space for the wheels, even when you can't see them:

It's like allowing space for a shorebird's feet even if they're under water.

Photo #2 & #3 have exactly that. The background is not sharp and (to me) makes for enough separation. The riders are crispy sharp and there is no question what the subject is (subjects are).
