It looks like Steve didn't have a lot of room to work with. So there
was a limited amount of isolation possible.
Looking at it again, shot 2 bothers me more from the cut-off wheels
of the peloton leaders. I prefer groups with space for the wheels,
even when you can't see them:

It's like allowing space for a shorebird's feet even if they're under water.

Photo #2 & #3 have exactly that. The background is not sharp and (to
me) makes for enough separation. The riders are crispy sharp and
