Ted, thanks for the compliment. I chose the f/4 lens over the f/2.8 lens
for several reasons: weight, bulk, and cost. I wanted to be able to carry
the lens all day and have space in my backpack for lunch, rain gear, and the
like.
I haven't used it with either extender yet. I'm thinking the 1.4x would be
handy to get me ~400mm f/5.6. Leica sez either extender will work fine with
this lens. I have a friend with the 1.4x extender who would gladly loan it
to me if I asked but in order to use it on my SL I'd have to send it to DAG
for modification. Fortunately my friend has re-discoverd the joys of the SL
and will soon be sending it to DAG himself.
I like working closer to the critters than many wildlife photogs do - as
long as the animal's not going to eat, trample or gore me - so the extreme
focal lengths don't interest me much, particularly in dense brush where I
can't see beyond 30' and smaller is less likely to get caught in the brush.
