Well said Mark. However shooting the Olympics at some events when your in the tangle of 400 photographers working everything from a 300mm to 1250mm Canon it's really tough trying to find some thing vertical to lean on. ;-) As everyone wants the same leaning spot. ;-)
So you use the highest possible shutter speed and widest possible aperture on a monopod..... you are not allowed to use tripods at anytime!!! And hope you don't get bumped at precisely the wrong moment of teh action happening. Oh yeah and you do all this with probably someone else's 400 or longer over each of your shoulders from behind! ;-)
It can get down right cuddly with lenses protruding all over the place. But there's absolutely no excuse for missing a picture so you make the best of it. Oh yeah and you do all this with manual focus Leica glass!
