On another day, these hikers were somewhat atypical - I don't usually see young families:

So which do you like better - people or no people?

I like both of them, Mark. The second reminds me of a hike I took to Sunol's high valley area with my daughters when the younger one was only 3. For those who've not had the pleasure, the hike to the High Valley area of Sunol Wilderness (near Livermore) is long steep and dusty; my older daughter, then 7, made the hike unassisted but the younger one had to be carried a significant part of the way mostly because she was constantly stopping to marvel at the cow pies along the way.

Once we reached the picnic tables at High Valley, the girls found a new energy source; one was bounding from flower to cow pie to signpost and back to the picnic table to re-fuel while the other was dancing ON the picnic table. I noticed a couple of twenty-something hikers approaching from below; at first they didn't see my kids and they looked winded from the hike. Once they spied the energetic kids they cleaned up their act and pretended that the hike was no big deal. Thanks for reminding me, Mark.
