Photographic primers?

Have a friend who is a railroad buff and does photographic shows of stuff
running by and nearby his house everyday. He does real well with his digital
camera using "everything automatic modes" as long as he has good light. He
doesn't know anything about f stops, shutter speeds and manual focusing;
the very things he needs to know when the weather turns on him and the
trains speeding by are too much for his programed modes to handle.
I haven't looked at the kind of literature he needs for many years, so I
wonder if you guys know of good basic primers he could use to begin learning
about the things that he wants to know, starting from ground zero.
The knowledge that we took as intuitive for the operation of our ancient
Leicas is a total mystery to people who buy today's wunderkameras. He's on
the right coast, so I can't get to him easily to help him along.
Thanks,
Roger
