Thanks again, and keep those comments coming! Oliver

Oliver,

Look at the EOS 1, 1N or EOS 3. All of those are very fast AF and IMHO better than the comparable Nikon bodies.....I switched from Nikon to Canon just for these reasons back when the EOS1 came out. I saw at a Braves game one night a fellow UPI photographer shoot a play at second. He had the 2nd baseman sharp, he jumped in the air, the outfield wall was sharp, he landed and the player was sharp again...it was that fast and that was the original EOS1 and 300 2.8. I remember shooting the NFL and cussing the Canon shooters because they could shoot with one hand and the old 80-200 2.8 as they walked backwards away from being run out of bounds and get useable shots. I could not do that with my Nikon gear.

The 50 1.4 USM lens is a great lens. Being USM it has AF as well as full time manual focus. You can touch the focus ring and it does not spin when it focuses, very nice. My Nikon 50 1.8 I can not touch the ring when it focuses as it is always spinning...something I HATE.

I am not familiar with any of the lower end Canon zooms as all I own and use are the L series lenses, except for the 50 1.4 which is optically in league with the L lenses. Canon used to make a 28-105 USM zoom that was really nice, do not know if they still make it or not.

As I said the other day I have and use EOS 1D cameras professionally and Nikon D1X and D50 for my fun photography as I like the old Nikon manual lenses, I never really liked their AF stuff, but the new 70-200 VR zoom looks nice, almost up to Canon Standards. For an entry SLR digital, IMHO nothing can touch the D50 from Nikon.

Anyway have fun and play with several different bodies...if you want a film camera now is the time to get them, the best of the best from Nikon and Canon is so cheap compared to what they were a few years ago.
