Doug,

The Novoflex I used was probably older than the one you've purchased so I
don't know how valid optical comparisons would be.  Mechanically I'd say the
400 f/5.6 was initially a bit steadier to use hand-held than the 400/6.8 but
after a while (how long depends on individual conditioning) arm fatigue
makes the lighter 400/6.8 easier to use all day.

Optically the one I used did not have the high contrast of the 400/6.8;
shadows were muddy, colors not as saturated.  This was about 25 years ago
with a used 400/5.6.
