IMHO the shadow is not distracting...I think you need to do a strong "4
corner" burn on this image....use dark corners to draw attention to the
pensive look, leave the Jesus as is, bring down a lot of the rest of the
image...print it as W Eugene Smith would have down in B&W, but leave it
color...burn and dodge to bring out the emotion that is in this photo.
I sent you a file off list showing you what I am talking about.
