Re: M8 comments :-) - picking lenses

Everyone:
Last weekend I shot digital (EOS 1D mk II, EOS 20D) and film (EOS Elan 7E) at Mono Lake, Yosemite NP, and Bodie ghost town. I used the Elan with an EF 24mm f/3.5L TS-E to correct perspective in the widest views.

That little film SLR cost all of $133 used from KEH. It was that or a Canon EOS 5D. With the $2700 I saved, I can buy a lot of film to shoot full-frame wide.

The only time I think about the digital crop factor is when I need something at max telephoto - then I figure the 500mm with the 1D will probably get me there with large mammals. If I need handheld reach for flying birds, the 400mm f/4 DO IS on the 20D is my rig. I don't really think about the numbers anymore (I'm a former enginer - I used to). I just use what will give me the coverage and DOF I'm after.

It's all about horses for courses.

Thanks to Doug, Sonny, Mark & Ted....

I am reassured! Now all I have to do is figure out how I can find the
cash for a bunch if new cameras-- the Little Lady is itching to
graduate from a P&S digital to a digital SLR, and my camera lust has
led me to an expensive 2d-hand Rolleiflex TLR..

I may be forced to try to write for money again!
