M6 TTL exposure meter

Thanks to all who gave me tips on the second camera. I settled on buying an
M6TTL with a Summicron-M 1.2 lens.
However, according to the instruction booklet, the LEDs should indicate correct
spot metering when the two triangular LEDs points towards each other.
I get a round red dot. Furthermore in playing with the metering system, it's
hard to get the metering systems to change unless I'm pointing it directly at a
bright light source, whether it's open wide or step-down.
Is there a possible problem with weak batteries or am I expecting too much from
the exposure meter? Perhaps being a new user, I need to gain a better
understanding of how the meter system works and what to expect.
Thanks,
Ollie
