David:
I've been using a Wimberly Sidekick in an Arca-Swiss head for three
years now. Tried a 4th Generation Designs sidekick-style gimbal head
for awhile, since it was even lighter. But it wasn't as rigid - too
much vibration for sharp images below 1/100 second. So I went back to
the Sidekick.
Whatever you try, be sure it's returnable.

I keep reading about the Manfrotto Long Lens support? It seems to
be a good, low cost alternative to the Wimberly heads, from the few
reviews I've read.
