I believe that Stephen Gandy has cranks for the M3. I think I bought mine
there.

Thanks, Carl. I was hoping that it would be possible to interchange
rewind cranks. I also have a Wasserman rewind crank and you are right he
does not make them any longer. I also agree the Leica MP crank is
absurdly expensive. I have found another supplier for cranks which look
very well made for under $100 but they just list them as fitting the
MP. But they look like they would fit an M3 as well. I need one more for
my second M3 which I love using. Both of my M3s were overhauled by Don
Goldberg and are smooth as silk.

Actually,
I have a couple old rewind cranks that I had bought, one I believe from
Photo Village in NYC and the other from Richard Wasserman, who, I
believe, may not be making them anymore. Anyway, I forget which is which
but I used them on my M3 and M2. When I sold the M3 is just transferred
the crank to the MP. I believe for both cranks I paid less than $100
each. I find it absurd what Leica is charging for an MP crank.

Since you have an MP, do you know if the rewind crank for the MP will
fit an M3?

I would go on to add that I prefer the M6 classic over the TTL because
the shutter speed dial turns in the same direction as that of my M2.
But the camera I really like is my MP because it has the feel and
solidity of the M3 but with a built-in meter and a finder less
flare-prone than the M6. Also, the shutter and geartrain of the MP are
so silky and quiet which just goes to prove that Leica could do that if
they wanted to all along. What I also like about the MP is that it has
the .85 viewfinder which approximates that of an M3 with its near
life-like magnification; desireable for two-eyed viewing and also for
use with longer focal lengths like the 75mm and 50mm lenses in terms of
focusing accuracy and larger framelines. And did I say quiet?
