Re: [Leica] Holiday snaps: Whitby Harbour

Thank you Henning,
Whitby doesn't (and can't ) really change much, although there are enormous residential developments at the souther end of the inner harbour. A nostalgic change (to the better) is that Whitby now has steam-drawn trains again, a through connection to Grosmont, and some through to Pickering, run by the North York Moors Railway and running through spectacular scenery. The locals even recently managed to stop Mc Donalds opening next to the swing bridge (hurrah!), the premises were subsequently occupied by Julian Graves, strangely enough a health foods/fair trading store.
Cheers
Douglas

Still a working harbour, Whitby has one of the few fishing fleets left in the UK, and also inshore fishing for crabs, lobster and salmon. The small boat is a Whitby Coble, with a winch on the gunwhales used for hauling in salmon nets.

Hope you like them
Douglas (working too hard and wishing we were there)

I really enjoy your Whitby shots, Douglas. It was a delightful place 30 years ago, and it looks just as appealing as ever. You've captured it marvelously with great light, and I think Sutcliffe would have been delighted to see your pictures as well.
