Ol' 4387's Elmar has the 1900 (7 o'clock) infinity lock. But received
wisdom is that early Elmars were un-numbered. So when did they start?
OTOH this lens has (thanks Greg of the sharp eyes) the s/n(?) 27665
on the front element retaining ring, which would appear to make it
very early. But I have no source of early Elmar numbers....
This would suggest to me:
a) That the lens is roughly contemporary with the body 4387 which
was a Leica I (c. 1926/27).
b) That this original lens was then re-mounted (when the camera was
converted into a III) into a universal interchangeable ('O") mount.
Observations:
.a) It's highly unlikely that such an early body and such an early
(?) lens are not an item. Why separate them?
b) It's much more likely that Leitz would have modified both the body
and the lens (into a new mount) at the same time.
c) In any case the recently coated old Elmar is amazingly good for
its age in terms of both contrast and colour rendition.

and follow the black-paint story.
Can anyone throw any more light on the subject?
