Roger,
What I dread seeing ten, twenty years down the road, is the sinking
realization someone has when they find that their digital file of junior
at two-years old, or daughter being crowned prom queen, or family picnic
with grandma, now long-deceased is on a CD or hard drive no longer
readable. I fear we are going to lose a whole generation of pictures as
the buying public commits deeper and deeper into digital equipment. I
use digital for my commercial work as it satisfies the time constraints
of my clients. But if I want my pictures to last and be part of my
photographic legacy or that of my family I commit to film. I doubt many
people realize this or have thought through their archiving
responsibilities to themselves or to their future generations.
Also, David, thanks for providing the statistics from which this thread
originated.

Really interesting numbers, David, thanks.
If I were a betting man, my guess is that the drying up of
processors will contribute to the demise of film as much or more
than the reduction in available films.
Also, the fact that we are an old "codger" group that isn't going to
be around that much longer (Ted excepted, of course) really adds the
catalyst to the doomsday reaction.
A shame, though, that in just a few more generations the image
consuming public will have little ability to appreciate good images.
Oh sure, there'll be a few artists holed up, producing good images
from their dwindling and irreplaceable stocks of silver halide
emulsions and being referred to as that person who uses film,
whatever that is, in those Leica and Hasselblad cameras, whatever
they are/were.
What, me worry?
