Golden-mantled ground squirrels like the guys in your pictures will take
whatever they can get. Yosemite's Mono Pass is a good place to find them:

Walk up to Yosemite's Vernal Falls and sit to eat a snack, and you'll
have more rodent company... ;-)
When I shoot wildlife, I try for eye-level shots to bring the viewer

Wildlife on the urban edge

A couple of minutes later, I had the 90/3.5 VC on the camera, and
managed to fill the frame with one of his cohorts.

These little guys are FAST, but their desire to "have what you're
having" gives the photographer a fighting chance.
