Hi David,
I like the original too, Swaledale is my all time favourite of the
Yorkshire Dales - wonderful countryside ranging between lush in the
valleys and desolate on the moors, with not a tree in sight.
But, you must admit that the spodge looks very much like a face :-)
Cheers

I took a closer look - converted it to BW to get rid of the colour
noise - and now...

I have no idea what it is - whatever it is, it does look rather
strange, alien and a little scary.
Not so scary, Douglas!
I duplicated your experiment, using both GIMP & FastStone Image
Viewer, and got your result each time. The reason is simple....
The "spot" is a light blue; which, when converted to B&W, will become
white (or near white). This explains why, in the days of B&W TV, all
announcers/newscasters /(I was one of them!)/ wore light blue shirts,
on set. The light blue reproduced as white, whereas a white shirt
looked grey.
Use GIMP (free), Photoshop or whatever graphics package you have to
clone out the spot. Simple desaturation will not work.
Besides, I _like_ the colour version!
Cheers!
