Re: I need a bigger tripod

Ted:
Like to see you use that 800mm f/8 indoors. ;)

EF 500mm f/4L IS, 8.5 lbs, EOS 1D mk II, 3.4 lbs, EF 1.4X II .5 lbs, **total 12.4 pounds** - this is my usual wildlife rig and while I've tried handholding it the shots weren't well composed since I was too shaky to aim precisely.

Fortunately the Gitzo 1325 mk II, Arca-Swiss B1 and Wimberley Sidekick are light enough at 7.7 pounds that I can carry a tripod with gimbal head everywhere without too much strain. The wildlife game makes you physically fit... but when you hike high up in places like Antelope Island you get some interesting shots:

EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS on EOS 10D
(Carried the 500mm and EOS 1D mk II on my back that day but didn't use 'em.)

When I need max reach for shy raptors I use EF 500mm f/4L IS + EF 1.4X + EF 2X on EOS 1D mk II:

(NOT handheld!)

My lightest handheld wildlife rig is EOS 10D + EF 400mm f/4 DO IS, about 6 pounds:

Mark, I hand hold the 280 2.8 with a 1.4 extender making it 400 f4.00 without any problem. And when necessary I add the 2X extender to that combination making it an 800mm f 8.00 without any problems. ;-) And it's a piece of cake. :-)

However, there's also a limit to one's common sense of what they can and can't hand hold in relation to what one is trrying to capture on film. :-)
