I took another look at the RAW file - obviously the only remedy would have been HDR - I think the dynamic range required was just too much for my old Canon 20D.
But they were only snapshots between getting the food ready anyway, so I didn't plan any great processing on them.

highlights on the right a little bit in Frotoshop.  Did you shoot RAW?  If
