Re: Further adventures at 32 below!

David:
Nice portrait of what's probably a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (according to biologist and bighorn specialist John Wehausen there are three true subspecies: Sierra Nevada, Rocky Mountain, and desert). I like the catchlight and uncluttered background.

One of the nice things about non-autofocus equipment like Leica R's is lower battery drain, a plus in the cold.

I'll be on Great Salt Lake's Antelope Island next week, not as cold as Alberta but it still could get down to 17 F / -8.3 C. I plan to carry spare batteries next to my body for EOS 10D and 1D mark II. Problem with bison and pronghorn is you need either to get dangerously close with shorter optics or you need to be far away with long lenses to avoid spooking 'em. So my mechanical Leica Ms won't be useful.

Wildlife managers at Hardware Ranch WMA east of Logan, UT can get you within 20 feet of feeding elk in December so I should get away with the 500mm f/4L and maybe 70-200mm f/2.8L on the 1D mk II there.

I'll look forward to more of your winter images from Jasper!

Over on the LRflex list, we've been discussing the operation of Leicas at minus 32 Celsius or so. Well, the film is back and not only did the R8 appear to work well, it worked perfectly! (I only wish the photographer did so well in those temperatures!)

Unfortunately, I'm a bit too busy over Christmas to get the other shots scanned and posted until early in the New Year.

Still, here is a big fella, at a more modest 20 below. You can find him by going to: www.horizon.bc.ca/~dnr and then clicking on "Featured Photo".

As always, comments and criticisms appreciated.

Thanks for looking.
