Joseph,
I'd recommend a used Nikon LS 2000 Coolscan. They're
going dirt cheap ($300 or so) and scan 35mm at
2000dpi. More than sufficient for your stated needs.
Only drawback is they don't work with USB or Firewire;
only SCSI (they come with a card). Best in a PC
environment if I remember correctly.
You can get software and firmware upgrades on the web.
The only reason I moved on from mine was to scan 6x6
negatives.
