RE: Field Day 2008, Santa Clara Valley style

DEAR MARK,
Thanks for the nice photos! I got my first license in 1962 and have
been a "Ham" ever since (AA2CV and 8P6FF here in Barbados). I was raised on
CW (Morse code) and still enjoy it very much. It is excellent mental
gymnastics and good for keeping the synapses firing as we age!
These days, some of the digital modes can get through bad
propagation and bg noise when you can't even hear the CW signal.
        Again, THANKS!
                CHEERS!
                        BOB

Subject: Field Day 2008, Santa Clara Valley style

Once a year in June, amateur radio operators across the United States
set up stations in remote or not-so-remote areas operating on battery or
emergency generator power, and make as many radio contacts as they can
in 24 hours. My local radio club set up in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Field Day is many things - an introduction of amateur radio to the
public, a contest, a chance for operators to gain experience with bands
they haven't on operated before. It's also a chance to practice
emergency operating skills that have been all too necessary in the
recent California wildfires.

Many times, CW, Morse code, will get through when voice modes are
unusable because of distance or interference:
